Women's Soccer Shut Out by Crosstown Rival Springfield

Box Score Boxscore and Play-by-Play

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Western New England University women's soccer team fell to crosstown rival Springfield College by a score of 4-0 Thursday afternoon at Suprenant Field. The defeat is the second consecutive at home for the Golden Bears, and the third straight loss overall after starting the season 3-0-1. Western New England's record now sits at 3-3-1.

The two teams were playing an even contest until midway through the first half, when Springfield forward Kim Rasmussen took a through ball in open space with a chance to score the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute. Western New England goalkeeper Briana Kubik came off her line to challenge Rasmussen in front of the net and the two collided, with Kubik making the sliding save. Rasmussen took the brunt of the collision, severely injuring her leg that required medical attention and she eventually was taken off the field by an ambulance.

Springfield got on the scoreboard, 1-0, in the 26h minute when Pride junior forward Nina Vitale was able to steal the ball in her offensive-third of the field, dribbled past two defenders and then she tucked a shot just inside the left post. That goal was all the scoring the visitors would need.

The Pride ended up getting goals from Lauren Muser and Vicky DiNatale, as well as another from Vitale to seal the victory. The road win improves Springfield's record to 3-1.

While corner kicks were even at 5-5, Springfield outshot Western New England 22-9 in the game, including 9-2 on goal.

Amanda Waluszko and Chelsea Kuzio led the Golden Bears with four shots apiece. Kubik made four saves until Casey Magee made her first appearance of the season in goal in the 67th minute; Magee ended up recording a save.

The Golden Bears will look to end their three-game losing streak this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. when the University of New England makes the trip to Suprenant Field, opening the Commonwealth Coast Conference schedule for both schools.
