SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--In a battle featuring top New England programs, nationally-ranked Amherst had to get a late goal to trip Western New England, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action on Saturday at Suprenant Field. The Lord Jeffs, who are No. 2 in the NSCAA coaches' and No. 4 in the D3soccer.com polls, remain unbeaten at 11-0-2 on the season, while the Golden Bears now stand at 11-4-3.
Amherst is ranked No. 1 in the region while WNE is 5th after the first NCAA Division III New England poll was released on Wednesday.

Western New England senior goalie and co-captain
Domenick Villano faced a total of 25 shots, making six saves on seven shots on net.
The Golden Bears offense couldn't get much going by getting only two shots throughout the game.
Chad Barrett had WNE's only shot on frame but Amherst keeper Thomas Bull made the stop. Senior midfielder
Alex Mazzella had another solid chance early in the second half, but his shot missed high of the net.
Before the contest, Mazzella and Villano joined
Jon Axton,
Jake Bartnik, co-captain
Kevin Parma and
Ryan Williams for a Senior Day ceremony that recognized their contributions on and off the field. The 2013 senior class has so far compiled a 54-24-9 overall record for a .626 winning percentage that includes a 2011 Commonwealth Coast Conference championship and NCAA tournament appearance that season.
Western New England is back in action on Tuesday (3 p.m.) at home when the Golden Bears take on Roger Williams in a pivotal conference matchup in the regular-season finale for both squads.
