Yeboa Amofa Registers First Career Goal in 3-0 CCC Triumph Over Roger Williams

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Western New England ended the regular season on Tuesday with a 3-0 victory over visiting Roger Williams in Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer action at Suprenant Field, clinching the No. 2 seed--coupled with Nichols' 0-0 draw at Curry, also played tonight--in the CCC Championship Tournament that starts this weekend.

The Golden Bears improve to 12-4-3 overall and finished the season on an eight-game conference unbeaten streak to go 6-1-2 in the CCC. The Hawks, meanwhile, were denied an opportunity to host a CCC quarterfinal game on Saturday after falling to 14-4-1 on the season and 4-4-1 in the conference. (Salve Regina is 4-3-1 in the CCC entering tomorrow's game at Eastern Nazarene, and holds the tiebreaker over Roger Williams.)

Nichols and WNE are both 6-1-2 in the CCC, but the Bison slip to the third seed because WNE holds the head-to-head tiebreaker after a 2-0 win at home on Sep. 28.

Senior Jake Bartnik netted his team-leading ninth goal in the 15th minute to give the Golden Bears the offense they would need. Ryan Williams centered a pass from the right wing into the box for Bartnik, whose initial shot was saved by Jon Pelloso before he left-footed his own rebound past the goalkeeper.

Chad Burke stretched WNE's lead to 2-0 in the 48th minute when he collected a loose ball inside the penalty area, depositing his first goal of the season and the second in his 39-game career.

Freshman Yeboa Amofa added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute, taking a feed from Williams. The scoring play resulted in Amofa's first collegiate goal and Williams' team-leading eighth assist to extend a career-best.

Senior co-captain Domenick Villano (5 saves) and freshman Kevin Strobel combined on the Golden Bears' ninth shutout of the season. Strobel's appearance snapped Villano's consecutive minutes played streak at 1,767, a figure that leads all CCC goalkeepers for playing time.

Western New England dictated the game offensively, leading Roger Williams in shots (16-11), shots on goal (9-5) and offside calls (7-0). The Hawks edged the Golden Bears on corner kicks, 4-3.

Western New England will host a CCC quarterfinal contest on Saturday at a time to be determined. The conference office will release the official pairings and times for the 2013 CCC tournament after the Salve Regina-Eastern Nazarene match-up Wednesday, so please check back to wnegoldenbears.com for postseason updates.
