Domenick Villano stood tall between the posts with 11 saves, to help propel Western New England to a 1-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer triumph over host Endicott on Saturday at Endicott Stadium.
"We were very fortunate to escape with a vital result tonight against a spirited Endicott squad that kept us under constant pressure," WNE coach Erin Sullivan said after the match. "However, we need to take better care of the ball and make more intelligent decisions late in the game. We look forward to solidifying that moving forward."
The Golden Bears (8-3-1 overall) improve to 3-1 in the CCC and vault into a three-way tie for first place by virtue of nationally-ranked Gordon losing at Nichols, 2-1, on Friday. The Scots and Bison--who lost 2-0 at WNE a week ago--are also 3-1 in the conference. The Gulls, meanwhile, dip to 6-6 on the season and 2-2 in the league.Â
The game was scoreless until the 77th minute when Williams recorded his second goal of the season.
Villano, a senior co-captain, faced 21 shots and set a season-high with his 11 saves while posting his sixth shutout.
"Our seniors were fantastic tonight and fueled a very resilient team in a tough road environment," Sullivan said. "
Ryan Williams had another opportunistic goal, and Dom made several outstanding saves down the stretch.
While peppering the WNE goal by a 3:1 margin, Endicott also enjoyed an 8-3 corner kicks advantage.
Alex Elia led the Gulls with game highs of six shots and five on goal.
