Box Score
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Freshman forward
Brionna Voight scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 17 minutes into the second half as part of a three-point afternoon to lead the Western New England women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory Wednesday over visiting MCLA in non-conference action at Suprenant Field. The Golden Bears are now unbeaten in their last seven games (5-0-2 in that stretch) to improve to 8-3-2 on the season, while the Trail Blazers fall to 5-7.
Bonnie Bousquet gave WNE a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute on a nice combination play. Voight passed the ball down the right wing to freshman
Katelyn Cummings, who was making an overlapping run from her midfield spot. Cummings then delivered a right-footed cross to Bousquet who headed her third goal of the season into the back of the net.
MCLA thought it had tied the game just two minutes later, but Jen Ferrari's close-range shot was blocked off the goal line by sophomore defender
Danielle Savoie. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Golden Bears at halftime.
However, in the 55th minute, Natalie Caney was able to get the equalizer for the Trail Blazers with her team-best 12th goal on a feed by Ferrari. MCLA became the first opponent in 455 minutes--covering parts of six games--to score on the Golden Bears.
But then seven minutes later, Voight netted her team-leading seventh tally of the season on an assist from
Sarah Marois.
Tayler Mazurski sent a ball into the right corner of the goal area to Marois, who took a stutter-step to get by a defender and sent a pass to Voight in front of the goal where she beat a defender to get her into scoring position for the tap-in.
In the 65th minute, MCLA almost tied the game again with three shots in a 1-minute, 18-second span that hit the crossbar, was blocked by the WNE defense and saved by Golden Bears keeper
Briana Kubik (4 saves). The sophomore backstop made the stop of the game in the 80th minute off the foot of Darien Sullivan during a scramble in front of the WNE goal.
Western New England enjoyed advantages in shots (19-11), shots on goal (8-6) and corner kicks (6-2).
After stepping out of Commonwealth Coast Conference play this afternoon, WNE returns to league action at 1:30 p.m. Saturday to host Wentworth at Suprenant Field.
