HARTFORD, Conn.--Junior attackmen
Adam Knapton and Michael Donahue led all scorers with five points and a game-tying four goals, respectively, to lead visiting Western New England University to a 14-11 non-conference win over Trinity College at Jessee/Miller Field in a top-20 showdown of nationally-ranked NCAA Division III men's lacrosse powers on Tuesday. The No. 14-ranked Golden Bears improve to 2-1 on the season while the No. 16 Bantams drop to 1-1.
Nick Shaheen led Trinity with four goals and
Rob Nogueras chipped in with three.
After Trinity closed the first half with two man-up goals to cap a three-goal run to tie it at 8-all, Western New England came out firing in a strong third quarter to reclaim the lead for good. Donahue got the scoring started at the 10:18 mark, followed by
Corbett Corrigan Harreys,
Nick Jez and Knapton with a man-up during a 3- minute and 51-second span as the Golden Bears led 12-8. Western New England had five of the six goals scored in the frame.
The Bantams couldn't get closer than three goals the rest of the way, as the Trinity offense was shut down for the final 8:59 by seven saves by WNE sophomore goalie
Brandon Body and four turnovers.
Body finished with a season-high 15 saves while Makar Zaverucha had 20 in the Trinity cage.
Western New England outhustled the Bantams with a 36 to 27 edge in ground balls, led by
Jesse DeLucca with a game-best eight and
Jack Liacos had six. Zaverucha topped Trinity with six. DeLucca was instrumental in allowing WNE to have its best performance (20-of-29) so far at the "X', winning 19 of 27 face-offs.
The teams were also tied at the end of the first quarter, 4-4. Western New England spotted the Bantams a 2-0 lead before reeling off three unanswered goals.
The Golden Bears held a slim 44-42 advantage in shots.
