OWINGS MILLS, Md.--Visiting Western New England University put a scare into 2012 NCAA Semifinalist Stevenson University before falling to the Mustangs, 9-5, on Saturday evening in a match-up of nationally-ranked Division III powers at Mustang Stadium.
The No. 12-ranked Golden Bears suffered a slow start in their season opener, falling quickly behind 6-1 after the first quarter. Western New England had three of the four goals scored in the second to get back in the game, 7-4, by halftime.
Senior Corbett Corrigan-Harreys and junior
Owen Caruso each had two goals for the Golden Bears, who held Stevenson to only two goals in the second half to make things interesting.
Peter Green and Billy Burgoyne paced No. 2 Stevenson's offense with three and two goals, respectively. Glen Tompkins chipped in three points on a goal and two assists, and Nick Rossi dished two assists.
The Mustangs have already played four games and improved to 4-0 after holding a slim 36-33 shooting advantage while winning the ground ball battle at 36 to 27.
Both teams cleared well as Western New England went 25-for-27 and Stevenson was 20-of-22. But the Mustangs were strong on possession play, evidenced by taking 15 of 17 face-offs.
The turning point in the contest seemed to be after Corrigan-Harreys tied it 1-all on a man-up goal at the 6:40 mark of the first quarter. Green put Stevenson back in the lead for good with 4:41 on the clock, when Western New England was whistled for a penalty on the same play. Then 32 seconds later, Mark Pannenton made it 3-1 with a man-up tally.
Caruso also had four ground balls while senior defenseman
Aaron Harris matched that total, along with a game-high three caused turnovers. Sophomore goalkeeper
Brandon Body added to WNE's defense by making 17 saves.
Sam Wyatt and Parker Bratton had eight and six ground balls, respectively, to lead SU's efforts there.
