BEVERLY, Mass.--Sophomore
Hannah Hill went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in to help Western New England claim a 5-2 win at Endicott in the second game of a Commonwealth Coast Conference softball doubleheader on Thursday, salvaging a split against the first-place Gulls who lost their first conference outing this season. The Golden Bears now stand at 21-14 overall and 11-3 in the CCC, while the Gulls are 14-16 but 13-1 in conference play. Endicott was victorious in the opener, 4-2.
Hill had a run-scoring double to left center field to knot the score at 1-1 in the fifth inning. She made it 4-1 in the sixth with a RBI-single to the pitcher.
Western New England took the lead for good in the top of the fifth, 2-1, when
Heather Fecteau scored on a throwing error. Hill, after reaching on her game-tying double, eventually came around to score on another EC error to make it 3-1.
The Golden Bears tacked on two more in the sixth on back-to-back RBI-singles by Hill and
Maria Francese.
Western New England sophomore
Lauren Zambrano had a solid performance in the circle. She allowed two runs (1 ER) and five hits while going the distance to pick up her 14th win in 18 decisions.
Sophomore catcher
Grace Kucharski joined Hill with two hits apiece as part of eight produced by the WNE squad.
In the opener, sophomores
Samantha Mulhern and
Emily Mastropaolo had two hits apiece for the Golden Bears.
The Blue and Green scored all of their runs in a four-run bottom of the third off Western New England starter
Heidi Grieger. Endicott senior Jocelyn Russo led off the inning with a single to center, and then was pushed up to second base on a sacrifice bunt by junior Jesse Bilafer. Senior catcher Krista Fales laced a RBI single to right center to plate Russo and put the Gulls ahead 1-0.
Senior first baseman Colleen Martin singled to put two runners on, and after a groundout, Michael connected on a 2-0 offering from Grieger and put the ball over the left field fence to make it 4-0 Endicott.
Grieger (2-4) took the loss but Golden Bears freshman
Leah Torre pitched well in relief, going three shutout innings.
In the top of the seventh, sophomore
Alexis Bukowski cut the WNE deficit in half with a two-run single to right field but the Golden Bears couldn't get any closer.
