BOSTON--Western New England University used offense and pitching to power its way past Wentworth Institute of Technology, 8-0 in the first game and 17-0 in the second (both in five innings due to the NCAA-run rule), in a Commonwealth Coast Conference softball doubleheader at Sweeney Field/Carr Softball Diamond. The Golden Bears improve to 14-9 overall, including a 6-2 mark in the CCC, while the Leopards dip to 4-17 on the season and 0-10 in the conference.
Sophomore
Lauren Zambrano and freshman
Heidi Grieger each threw a no-hitter--believed to be the first two to accomplish the feat in school history.
Zambrano (10-3) punctuated her day in the circle with another career milestone with 10 strikeouts. Her perfect game was spoiled by a two-out walk in the second inning.
Leading 2-0 after the opening frame, Western New England blew the game wide open with five runs in the second. Zambrano--who helped her own cause with three hits--smacked her first career home run, with a runner on base, to highlight the inning.
The Golden Bears cranked out 11 hits, including five for extra bases. Junior
Maria Francese hit her third career homer and a triple among three hits. Sophomore
Samantha Mulhern had two hits, including a RBI-double, and senior co-captain
Jeana Longo recorded a double.
In the second game, the Golden Bears' offense was strong from top to bottom in the lineup as 10 of 12 student-athletes registered at least one hit. Western New England scored in every inning, including seven in the fifth, and rapped 15 hits.
But the story of this contest was another solid pitching performance as Grieger (1-1) completed a perfect game. She posted a career-best five strikeouts and induced nine groundouts as only one ball was hit out of the infield.
Sophomore

Hannah Hill,
Emily Mastropaolo and freshman
Heather Fecteau chipped in two hits each. Hill also had two RBI.
