Gordon Slips Past Field Hockey on Three First-Half Goals, 3-1

Box Score WENHAM, Mass.--Two-time All-Commonwealth Coast Conference midfielder Jaynie Mueller scored her first goal of the season, but it wasn't enough as Western New England fell by a close 3-1 decision to host Gordon in CCC field hockey action at the Brigham Athletic Complex on Tuesday. The Golden Bears fall to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference, while the Fighting Scots up their mark to 6-2 and 2-1.

Karli Balmer set up Sarah Shannon in the 3rd minute and then Brittany Hawkins 1 minute and 5 seconds later to stake the Fighting Scots to a 2-0 lead. Courtney Scott scored her CCC-leading 14th goal of the season, unassisted, in the 22nd minute to give GC a commanding 3-0 advantage.

In the second half, WNE cut the deficit to the final two-goal margin on Mueller's unassisted tally with just 28 seconds left. She ended up with five of the Golden Bears' 16 shots, including four on target.

Starting goalie Anna Bury and reserve Shannon Hicks played each half for Gordon, with Hicks making four saves and giving up the goal that spoiled the combined team shutout.

Western New England keeper Emily Arnold recorded eight stops to help the Golden Bears stay close, especially in the first 35 minutes when Gordon peppered the WNE cage with 11 shots.

The Golden Bears outshot the Scots 9-5 in the second half, keeping them off the scoreboard as well.
