Box Score
MIDDLETOWN, R.I.--Lindsey Mazzola scored the only goal of the game on an assist from Erin Gendreau in the 15th minute to lift Salve Regina to a 1-0 victory over visiting Western New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey action at Gaudet Field on Wednesday evening.
While WNE was not rewarded with the win, the Golden Bears held Salve (11-4, 4-4 CCC)--the highest-scoring team in the conference--to its lowest offensive output of the season and held an opponent to a lone goal for the third time.
Reigning CCC Defensive Player of the Week choice freshman
Grace Trupe made seven saves to keep the Golden Bears (4-9 overall, 1-6 CCC) close. But Murphy McCann stopped six shots to earn her fourth shutout this season.
Senior co-captain
Megan French had three of WNE's eight shots. Salve recorded 15 shots with eight on the cage.
The Golden Bears pressed under a minute to play to try to send the game into overtime, creating a few quality chances in front of McCann. The Seahawks, however, were finally able to pounce on a loose ball in a scramble in front of the net after a McCann save and run out the remaining seconds.
Western New England is back in action on Saturday (1 p.m.) at Endicott in Beverly, Mass., for another conference contest.
