SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Western New England jumped on visiting Westfield State early, but were unable to hold on to the lead against a steady offensive attack in a 5-1 loss to the Owls in non-conference women's soccer action at Suprenant Field on Wednesday.
Things started well enough for the Golden Bears (5-7-3 overall) who scored the first goal in the 8th minute on a nice buildup of play. Senior
Sarah Stevens received a pass from the right flank and eluded a defender by spinning to her left at the top of the penalty area, then she dished a feed to classmate
Tayler Mazurski who found the back of the net by sliding a shot underneath the outstretched left hand of keeper Anne Stack (2 saves). It was Mazurski's team-leading fourth goal of the season while Stevens recorded her first collegiate point with the assist.
Westfield State, however, scored two lucky goals 4 minutes and 41 seconds apart to go up for good, 2-1. The first one came just 1:53 after WNE went up 1-0 as Sarah Sypek sent a left wing pass into the middle of the box where Ashleigh Chretien's shot that she didn't get all of it just glanced off the outstretched hands of junior keeper
Briana Kubik diving to her left. Then at the 14-minute mark off a corner kick, defender Nicole Gay scored her first goal of the year when her shot was stopped by Kubik, but the rebound bounced off the head of a Golden Bears defender against the crossbar and into the upper-left corner of the net.
Western New England had a chance to tie it at 2-all in the 22nd minute when Mazurski stole the ball from an Owls defender and took a left-footed shot from long range that was knocked down by Stack. Mazurski ended up with four shots and junior
Emma Norden added three.
But Kelsey Murray added an insurance goal in the 39th minute and Sypek scored the first of her two goals with just 16 seconds remaining in the first half to give the Owls a commanding 4-1 advantage at the intermission.
The Golden Bears had the first solid scoring opportunity in the second half in the 62nd minute when junior
Sarah Marois sent a pass near the top of the right corner of the 6-yard box to Mazurski, who cut back to her left but the shot was blocked down by the defense.
Kubik finished with six saves to give her 95 on the season and 306 for her career. Junior
Casey Magee played the final 21:15 and made one save.
The Owls (9-2-2) held wide margins in shots (28-9), shots on goal (12-4) and corner kicks (9-1). This afternoon marked the first time that WNE had allowed five goals in a game this fall, and this was the first meeting between Pioneer Valley-based teams separated by 20 miles had met in 10 years.
Western New England resumes Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday when it travels to Boston to meet Wentworth, kicking off at 12:30 p.m.
