Golden Bears Eke Out 2-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference Win at Wentworth

Box Score BOSTON--Junior Chad Burke broke a 1-1 tie with his first goal of the season in the 77th minute to lift the Western New England University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory Saturday over host Wentworth in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at Sweeney Field. The Golden Bears improve to 9-6-2 overall and the Leopards fall to 4-6-4, while both teams now stand 2-3-1 in the conference.

Trailing 1-0 in the 70th minute, Wentworth got on the scoreboard on a goal by freshman Joe Kalil from an assist by classmate Semuel Dacaj. Decaj sent a pass in from the right side where Kalil blasted a shot past Golden Bears sophomore keeper Kevin Strobel from just inside the box.

Sophomore Neil Williams had given the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute, taking a feed from classmate Brandon Bolger. The opening stages of the game saw back and forth play through the midfield as neither team was able to create any scoring opportunities until Williams drilled a one-timer past Leopard freshman Noah Scanlon.

Williams' goal would stand as the lone marker of the opening stanza as the Golden Bears held a 6-5 shot advantage in addition to the lead.

Besides the final score, Western New England also edged Wentworth in shots (18-14) while taking five of the six corner kicks.

Strobel made six saves to earn his ninth win of the season for WNE. Scanlon ended up with four stops.

Less than seven minutes after the Leopards tied it 1-1, Burke put WNE ahead for good when Bolger threw the ball in from the left sideline. Senior Zachary Coopee flicked the throw-in to Burke, who buried a shot inside the left post with 13 minutes and 17 seconds left in the contest.

The Golden Bears controlled play early in the second half and had a flurry of shots, beginning when Burke hit the crossbar in the 57th minute. Western New England ended the flurry with a corner kick; however, the shot off the corner was wide.

The Leopards had a pair of shot attempts late, however were not able to get the equalizer.

Western New England travels to Nichols on Tuesday while Wentworth is at Roger Williams on Wednesday.
