Box Score NEWPORT, R.I.--Western New England University used four different scorers to register a season-high in goals as the Golden Bears routed host Salve Regina University, 4-0, in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's soccer action on Tuesday at Reynolds Field. With the win, Western New England closes the regular season with a 7-8-4 overall record and No. 6 seed (4-3-2) in the upcoming CCC championship tournament. The host Seahawks end their season at 3-13 overall and 1-8 in the conference.
The four goals represents the most WNE has scored since a 5-0 win versus Maine Maritime in the 2013 season opener at the Husson Classic. It also means the most goals scored and largest margin of victory against a conference opponent since WNE defeated Anna Maria College, 6-0, on Oct. 27, 2010.
Senior
Tayler Mazurski led the WNE offense with four points on a goal and two assists while junior keeper
Briana Kubik made seven saves to earn her CCC-leading eighth shutout, extending her career best for a single year.
Junior
Becca Mercieri gave the Golden Bears all the offense they would need in the 12th minute, tapping in a left-wing pass from Mazurski inside the left post. That was Mercieri's third goal of the season, signaling a career high.
The Golden Bears scored another less than 10 minutes before intermission. After a couple of shots kept the ball in play in front of the Seahawk goal, junior
Alicia Lewis cleaned up the loose ball to score her second goal of the season for a 2-0 lead that the visitors carried into the break.
Western New England also scored a pair of goals in the second half. Mazurski scored her team-leading sixth goal in the 51st minute, and then fed junior
Emma Norden with a through-ball for her fourth goal in the 74th. Mazurski matched her career high for goals in a season and established personal records for seven assists (6 in 2012) and 19 total points (18 in '12) while Norden now has four goals and nine points on the year to better her 4-0-8 totals during her 2012 freshman campaign.
Anna Shultz had three of Salve's 12 shots as the Seahawks outshot the Golden Bears, 12-9 (7 to 6 on frame), in the four-goal loss. Western New England took four of the five corner kicks in the contest.
Western New England will be on the road for the CCC Quarterfinals that begin on Saturday, traveling to Quincy to take on No. 3 seed Eastern Nazarene at 11 a.m. The Golden Bears are seeded sixth. The official tournament announcement will be made by the conference office later tonight.
