Box Score BIDDEFORD, Maine--The Western New England University field hockey team concluded its 2014 season on Saturday with a 6-0 loss at the hands of Commonwealth Coast Conference regular-season champion University of New England at Big Blue Turf. The visiting Golden Bears finish at 6-13 overall and 3-9 in the CCC, while the Nor'easters will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference championship tournament.
Nicole Matarozzo led UNE with four goals and Erin Bibber scored just 43 seconds into the contest to set the tone offensively.
Freshman goalie
Grace Trupe made a career-high 13 saves for Western New England, which was led in shots by classmate
Allison Jackson with three.
All things considered, there were many successes for a young Golden Bears squad that featured just one senior and three juniors in the first year of Judy Strong's coaching tenure. Western New England doubled its win total from 2013, beat Nichols in back-to-back meetings for the first time in seven years, increased its goal-production and gave up 36 fewer goals since the previous fall.
The six-goal decision finished off a second consecutive regular-season title in the league for the Nor'easters (14-6, 11-1 CCC), who have now won each of the 12 all-time meetings against the Golden Bears. UNE will host fourth-seeded Salve Regina University in a tournament semifinal on Wednesday (4 p.m.).
