Sean Lawton led all scorers with four points on a goal and three assists, and classmate
Jesse DeLucca was dominant in the face-off "X", as Western New England doubled up Trinity College (Conn.), 10-5, to pick up its first victory of the season in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Golden Bear Stadium. The Bantams fall to 0-3 while WNE now stands at 1-3 after winning its 11th consecutive home opener.
Justin McKinney (2 goals),
Colton Craig (2 goals) and
Owen Caruso (1 goal, 1 assist) also figured into the WNE offense as the senior class accounted for 10 of the team's 16 points.
DeLucca turned in one of the best games of his career by winning 14 of 19 face-offs and scooping up a game-best 11 ground balls. Classmate
Trevor Scott also played a key role defensively as the Golden Bears gave up an opponent low in goals this afternoon, recording two caused turnovers and five ground balls. Fellow senior
Jack Liacos chipped in one caused turnover and three ground balls.
Seth Bird came off the Trinity bench to lead the Bantams offensively with two goals and an assist. James O'Connell also had a multi-point game with a goal and a helper. Goalkeeper Mickey Zaverucha made 19 saves and had a team-best four ground balls.
Western New England took advantage of early Trinity penalties to take a 4-1 lead with 3 minutes to play in the second quarter. After Trinity's Matthew Hauck tied the contest at 1-all on a man-up with 6:51 showing in the first quarter, Craig recorded his first of two goals this season, both man-up, to put WNE up 2-1 1 minute and 35 seconds later. The Golden Bears extended their lead to three on goals by Lawton and Craig at 9:23 and 3:00 on the clock before the half.
Both teams scored three man-up goals, with Trinity in four opportunities and WNE, six.
The teams then traded goals as WNE held a 5-2 advantage at the intermission.
McKinney scored both of his goals in the third quarter around James O'Connell's first of the spring for a 7-3 lead going into the fourth. The Golden Bears thought they had another or two to start the second half, but Zaverucha made outstanding back-to-back saves. Craig was stopped going top right-corner from the edge of the goal crease, and then senior
Mike Donahue scooped up the ground ball and in the same motion fired a shot that the goalie turned aside while still airborne trying to get into position.
Western New England--which never trailed in the contest--outscored Trinity in the final stanza, 3-2, thanks to first career goals from freshmen
Maxwell Berteletti and
Ryan Dickinson. Bird scored two man-up goals for the Bantams.
Junior goalie
Brandon Body was solid in the WNE net with 11 saves and three ground balls.
Western New England also enjoyed statistical advantages in shots (39-25), shots on goal (29-16), ground balls (50-26), clears (18-for-21, 15-of-23) and face-offs won (14-5).
