AUBURNDALE, Fla.--Nationally-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to escape with a 6-4 non-conference victory over Western New England at Lake Myrtle Park on Friday, closing the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational for the latter.
The Warhawks (3-0) are 13th in the American Baseball Coaches' Association poll and 16th by D3baseball.com. The Golden Bears, who went 3-6 during their spring break tour of the Sunshine State, head back north with an unaccustomed 4-7 record overall.
Jared Fon broke a 4-4 deadlock in the final frame with a RBI-double to center field, and the UWW added an insurance run when Kyle Haen crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Senior co-captain
Steve Ambrosino had two of WNE's five hits, including a run-scoring double that staked the team to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. He later came around to make it 2-0 on a RBI-groundout by freshman
Daniel Morin.
After the Warhawks got on the scoreboard in the second, WNE acquired its second two-run lead of the game in the fourth frame by taking advantage of a Warhawk miscue. Sophomore
Kevin Marciano reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing freshman
Kyle Maglio to score an unearned run from second base.
But UWW got a run back in the fifth when Dylan Friend had a sacrifice fly. Then in the sixth, the Warhawks took their first lead, 4-3, on a throwing error and wild pitch.
Western New England, however, got the equalizer in its "home" half as Marciano singled to right field to bring home Maglio.
Brock Liston got the win in relief, pitching 2-1/3 scoreless innings with one hit and two strikeouts. Austin Jones worked the ninth for the save.
Junior
