Shelby Trebbe Leads the Offense and Emily Castleman Backstops the Defense in 11-7 Win

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Senior Shelby Trebbe scored four goals to lead the Western New England offense and junior goalie Emily Castleman made eight saves as the Golden Bears used a strong second half to dismiss Westfield State, 11-7, in non-conference women's lacrosse action under frigid conditions at Golden Bear Stadium on Tuesday. The visiting Owls drop to 1-1 on the season while the Golden Bears remain unbeaten at 2-0.

Meg Griffin paced Westfield with four goals and four ground balls, followed by Blair Smith with a pair of tallies and a game-high five ground balls.

Junior Kaitlynn Stevens matched teammate Trebbe with four points on two goals and two assists, while sophomore Taylor Scialdone added two goals and an assist for the Golden Bears.

Western New England starters Jessica Stumpf, Sarah Stevens and sophomore Jill Truax led a defensive unit that limited the Owls to 17 shots, 15 on goal, and started the transition to an offense that generated 36 shots.

After Jessica Scannapieco gave WNE a 1-0 lead with her fourth goal of the season off a draw control win to open the game, Westfield came back to take a 2-1 lead. Roni Orcutt got the Owls on the board at the 24:41 mark after the Golden Bears failed to clear and she took advantage of the turnover with her third tally of the spring. Then 2 minutes and 56 seconds later, Griffin scored her first of three on the afternoon that put the Owls in the lead for the only time, 2-1.

Western New England responded by scoring four of the next six goals, highlighted by two from Kaitlynn Stevens, to close the half and take a 5-4 advantage into the intermission.

In the second half, Griffin pulled Westfield into a 5-5 tie with her third just 14 seconds in before Western New England began to take control. Senior tri-captain Kelsey Sherman scored the go-ahead goal at 28:07 and Trebbe added another while a man-down at 22:48 as the Golden Bears took the first two-goal lead of the contest.

Scialdone completed the three-goal run at 19:35 before Smith and Griffin answered to make it an 8-7 WNE lead. The Golden Bears, however, put together another three-goal string to seal the win.

Western New England dominated possession evidenced by a 12-4 advantage in draw controls, led by Scannapieco with a game-best seven and Sherman contributed three.

Both teams recorded 26 ground balls. Kaitlynn Stevens led WNE with four and four other Golden Bears posted three.

Mimi Khampaeng had 12 saves in the loss.

The Golden Bears are back in action at 4 p.m. Tuesday when they host Bridgewater State of Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, a league affiliation of Westfield, too.
