Senior Captain Brandon Stroud Scores Three Points as Skaters Salvage 4-4 Tie at Stonehill

EASTON, Mass.--Senior captain Brandon Stroud recorded a game-high three points as the Western New England University men's hockey team skated to a 4-4 overtime tie at NCAA Division II Stonehill College on Wednesday. The Golden Bears settle with a 1-11-3 record on the season while the Skyhawks--who are unbeaten at 3-0-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference--are now 8-4-3.

Anthony D'Elia scored with 1 minute and 12 seconds left in regulation to send the non-conference game into overtime for the Skyhawks, who rallied from a four-goal deficit with three in the third period.

Stroud had a pair of goals and an assist to push his team-leading totals to seven assists and 11 points.

Western New England had the best chance to win in the extra 5-minute session as senior assistant captain Michael Darrar hit the post from his position on the point 2 minutes in. In the waning seconds, freshman David DiSchiavi had his shot blocked.

Senior Nick Diorio staked WNE to a 1-0 lead just 2 minutes after the opening faceoff with his first goal of the season. Sophomore Josh Twietmeyer and senior Joe Budnick assisted on the play. In the second period, Stroud buried back-to-back tallies less than 4 minutes apart to make it 3-0 and freshman Matthieu Audet notched his first collegiate goal from Stroud midway through the stanza for a seemingly comfortable four-goal advantage.

Stonehill starting goalie Chris Tasiopoulos was chased out of the net after four goals allowed in 29:53.

The Skyhawks, however, began their comeback late in the second when Robbie Dorgan scored his fifth goal of the season while on the power play on a feed from D'Elia with only 33 seconds remaining.

Stonehill closed within 4-2 at the 1:41 mark of the third period on Brendan White's first goal of the season and assisted by D'Elia. White struck again with 2:55 left and Elia found the back of the net 1:43 later for the game-tying goal with the hosts employing an extra attacker after pulling the goalie.

Senior Tim Carr made 39 saves for WNE, which was outshot 43 to 32 and blocked 19 SC attempts. Patrick Farrington came in relief of Tasiopoulos, stopping 18 shots to help the Skyhawks stay in the contest.

With its non-conference schedule complete, the Golden Bears can turn their attention to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast docket for the rest of the season. Western New England will host Johnson & Wales at 1:45 p.m. Saturday at Smead Rink at Blunt Park, signaling an end to a four-game road swing.
