MILTON, Mass. (October 27, 2015) - Junior forward
Kaitlyn Lima (New Bedford, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal one minute and 45 seconds into overtime, lifting Curry College to a 1-0 victory over Western New England University this evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's soccer action at Walter M. Katz Field.
With the win, Curry (13-5-1, 3-5-1 CCC) secures a spot in the CCC Tournament, which is set to begin this Saturday with quarterfinal round action. Western New England sees its season come to a close at 4-13-2 and 2-6-1 in conference play.
Senior goalkeeper
Briana Kubik (Blandford, Mass.) turned in a strong performance in the final match of her collegiate career, making 11 saves for the Golden Bears. Freshman
Marissa Veilleux (Newington, Conn.) started the contest in net but was not challenged during her nine minutes of action.
Seniors
Alicia Lewis (Johnsonville, N.Y.) and
Rebecca Mercieri (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and junior
Samantha Emmert (Hyde Park, N.Y.) led the Western New England offensive effort with two shots on goal apiece, but Curry junior goalkeeper
Morgan Stott (Dartmouth, Mass.) turned aside all nine attempts that she faced en route to her seventh shutout of the season.
After battling through 90 scoreless minutes, Lima sent Curry home with a win just under two minutes into the extra session, when the Colonels were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area. The junior fired a high shot up over Kubik's head, finding the back of the net for the game-winner.
Curry outshot Western New England by a 20-15 margin in the match, and also held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
