Four Different 'Bears Find the Cage at Nationally No. 3-Ranked Stevenson in 17-4 Loss

Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md.--The visiting Western New England University men's lacrosse team jumped to an early lead at nationally-ranked Stevenson University, but couldn't sustain that momentum over the final three quarters in a 17-4 non-conference loss to the No. 3 Mustangs on Saturday evening at SU Mustang Stadium. Western New England evens its record to 1-1 while Stevenson improves to 2-1 on the season.

A pair of sophomores staked the Golden Bears to a 2-0 first quarter lead as Max Berteletti was assisted by Justin Bard at the 7:02 mark and Bard netted his team-leading sixth goal of the season 1 minute and 10 seconds later with a feed from senior Ben Borsellino.

Fifty seconds later, however, Stevenson's Dylan Muti ignited a 10-goal run until the 5:38 mark of the second stanza. Even with that offensive explosion, WNE was only behind 4-2 after 15 minutes of play.

Paul Danko paced the Mustangs offense with four goals and an assist, while Billy Burgoyne added a hat-trick, Stephen Banick (2 assists), Tony Rossi, Colin Dabney (1 assist) and Muti (1 assist) all scored a pair of tallies.

Junior Mike Jednak, a transfer from Dean College, registered his first career goal in a WNE uniform at the 3:14 mark in the second quarter. Borsellino assisted on the man-up goal. Junior James Kolesar accounted for the Golden Bears' fourth goal--from sophomore Keegan Dudeck--with just a second left before the halftime horn.

Junior David Novitzky led all players with seven ground balls for Western New England, which was outshot 54 to 38. Callum Robinson, who posted two assists, led Stevenson with six ground balls of the team's 34.

Leading 10-4 at the intermission, Stevenson kept WNE off the scoreboard in the second half to secure the win.

The Golden Bears went 2-for-11 on man-up opportunities while the Mustangs converted all three of their such scoring chances.

Western New England returns home on Wednesday (5 p.m.) versus another nationally-ranked opponent in No. 12 Amherst College at Golden Bear Stadium.
