Kevin Marciano both had two hits on Friday, but the Western New England University baseball team's comeback bid against Hope College fell just short, 6-5 in 10 innings, at the 2015 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Chain of Lakes Park #3. It was the season opener for both squads.
Leadoff hitter Devin Schaefers led the Flying Dutchmen's 13-hit attack by going 3-for-6 with two runs batted in. Ryan Konkle went 3-for-4 at the plate, including a double, and had two RBI. Schaefers singled home pinch-runner Tyler Gulick from third base with the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th and two outs.
Colmenares tripled to right field in his first at-bat as a Golden Bear, bringing home senior
Matt Anziano from first base as Western New England took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
With the Golden Bears trailing 5-2 in the eighth, junior
Doug Milne and senior
Steve Buckley reached base on back-to-back walks. After
Jake Chipka was able to get two strikeouts, Colmenares came through and rocked a home run to plate Milne and Buckley to tie the game at 5-all.
Matt Glowacki, Hope's third pitcher of the afternoon, picked up the win after two scoreless innings without allowing a hit. He struck out four batters and walked one.
Marciano had a RBI-single to right field in the seventh to bring WNE within 4-2 before Konkle had a RBI-single through the left side in the bottom half to restore Hope's three-run cushion, 5-2.
Senior starting pitcher
Trevor Breton struck out 11 Flying Dutchmen in 7-1/3 innings of work. Junior
Matt Fedor took the loss as he had three strikeouts in 2-1/3 innings.
Western New England will continue its Invitational play on Saturday against Trinity-Conn. (3:30 p.m.) here in Winter Haven at Chain of Lakes Park.
