SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Nationally No. 10-ranked Amherst College scored two goals in the first half on the way to a 2-0 win over host Western New England University in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday at Suprenant Field. The Lord Jeffs, who are rated 10th in this week's NSCAA coaches' Division III poll, improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Golden Bears fall to 2-4.
Western New England was able to hold Amherst to its lowest offensive output on the road so far this season, but Christopher Martin broke a scoreless tie in the 27th minute with his fourth goal. Greg Singer delivered a centering pass from the right flank as the ball went through a maze of players in front of the goal, where Martin one-timed a shot from 8 yards out into the lower-left part of the net.
Nico Pascual-Leone added an insurance goal, unassisted, 3 minutes and 11 seconds later to put the Lord Jeffs up 2-0.
Amherst keeper Thomas Bull had to make just one save to record his third shutout this fall already.

Amherst also won key statistical categories in shots (13-6), shots on goal (6-1) and corner kicks (4-3). Senior back and team captain

Western New England continues a three-game homestand at 1:30 p.m. Saturday against conference opponent Wentworth, which is regionally ranked at 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the CCC, for the Golden Bears' CCC home opener.
