Golden Bears Offense, Defense Flexes Muscles Over Newbury to Conclude Husson Classic

Box Score BANGOR, Maine--The Western New England University women's soccer team had balance on both sides of the field in a convincing 4-0 victory Sunday over Newbury College at the 11th annual Husson University Eagles Classic at Boucher Field.

Western New England and Husson were tied in the team standings at 1-0-1, but the Golden Bears win the Classic title on goal differential as the tiebreaker. The St. Joseph's (Maine) Monks finished third and Newbury placed fourth. Western New England also won the tournament in 2012 and '13.

With its first win of 2015, Western New England (1-1-1 overall) ran its unbeaten streak at the Classic to seven games (6-0-1) since 2009, outscoring opponents 20-2 over that span. The Nighthawks fall to 0-3 on the season.

The Golden Bears saw six different student-athletes register at least one point, including junior Brooke Labrie who notched her first collegiate goal just 78 seconds into the contest to give WNE the only offense it would need. According to Coach Ron Dias, Labrie's tally may be the program's quickest to start a game during his 22-year tenure.

The first half ended with senior Paige DuPilka poking home her first career goal through traffic from close range. The insurance goal came in the 37th minute.

The WNE starting defense of senior tri-captain Jessica Burke, junior Katelyn Cummings, sophomore Marielle Caron and freshman Erin Grimes allowed Newbury just two shots on goal. Senior tri-captain Briana Kubik played the first 61:20 in goal and freshman Marissa Veilleux the final 28:40 to combine on the shutout.

Western New England also scored twice in the second half. In the 50th minute, sophomore Christina Delude took a pass from senior Emma Norden near midfield and dribbled down the right side, then rifled a shot off the left post and into the back of the goal from 12 yards out. Norden added a penalty kick goal, her team-leading second tally and five points on the season, 10 minutes later to account for the final four-goal margin.

The Golden Bears' offense produced a season-high 36 shots and six corner kicks.

Host Husson nipped Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 1-0, in this afternoon's other contest.
