OWINGS MILLS, Md. (March 5, 2016) - Senior
Taylor Dubose (Altamont, N.Y.) registered three points, including the go-ahead goal with 1:45 remaining in the game, as the Western New England University men's lacrosse team notched a 9-8 non-conference victory at No. 12 nationally ranked Stevenson (Md.) University this evening at Mustang Stadium.
ÂÂ
Dubose finished with two goals and one assist, while juniors
Keegan Dudeck (Longmeadow, Mass.) and
Justin Bard (Westfield, Mass.) recorded four points each as the Golden Bears bounced back from their season-opening setback with a statement victory on the road.
ÂÂ
Stevenson was led by junior
Wade Korvin (Odenton, Md.), who tallied four points on two goals and two assists. Senior
Stephen Banick (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior
Parish Young (Fair Haven, N.J.) were also key contributors for the Mustangs, totaling three points each.
ÂÂ
Sophomore goalie
Steven Kerr (Hopkinton, Mass.) earned the win with a season-high 13 saves in the cage, while his counterpart, senior
Connor Skeen (Towson, Md.) took the loss after allowing nine goals on 16 shots.
ÂÂ
Western New England led 3-2 after a back-and-forth first quarter, with Dubose, classmate
Patrick Dillon (Baldwin, N.Y.) and freshman
Jared Ward (Littleton, Mass.) providing the offense for the visitors. The Golden Bear defense clamped down in the second period, keeping the Mustangs off the board, while Dudeck scored his third of the season at the 8:05 mark to give Western New England a 4-2 edge heading into halftime.
ÂÂ
Stevenson pulled even with a pair of goals early in the third quarter, before Ward and Bard restored Western New England's two-score advantage with tallies less than a minute apart. The Mustangs answered by reeling off three straight goals, including two from Korvin, to take their first lead of the game (7-6) with 1:45 left in the frame. Dudeck knotted the score yet again, however, with his second of the night on a feed from Bard 32 seconds later.
ÂÂ
The Bard-Dudeck duo combined to put the Golden Bears back in front (8-7) at the 8:16 mark of the fourth quarter, and Western New England held onto that lead until Banick netted the equalizer with 3:13 on the clock. Dubose came up big for the Golden Bears late, taking a feed from Dudeck with less than two minutes remaining in the game and burying his shot past Skeen for the game-winner.
After opening the season with two straight road games, Western New England (1-1) returns to Springfield for its home opener against Trinity on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Stevenson (1-2) will also be in action on Wednesday against No. 2 ranked Salisbury.ÂÂ
