Field Hockey Cruises Past Westfield State 6-1

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- The Western New England University Field Hockey team put together a team effort, with Taylor Klesyk and Emily Campbell leading the way for the Golden Bears as they took down the Owls of Westfield State University 6-1 from Golden Bear Stadium on Thursday afternoon. Goalkeeper Zoey Wexler made eight saves in the win.

Records:

  • Western New England: 3-2 (1-0 CCC)
  • Westfield State: 2-5 (1-1 MASCAC)

How it Happened:
After putting together a six-goal outing in their conference opener against Roger Williams University, the Golden Bears came out firing in the non-conference matchup with Westfield State on Thursday. Western New England would see the first four of five penalty corners go their way in a chance to open the scoring. On the Golden Bears fifth penalty corner of the contest, they would capitalize for their first goal of the game. Off a scramble in front of the cage guarded by Owls goalkeeper Riley Goulet, Taylor Klesyk gathered a rebound shot and sent the ball across the crease to the back post, finding the stick of Emily Campbell who tapped in the game's first goal. Campbell collects her second goal of the season for Western New England.

Shortly after the Campbell tally, the Golden Bears would grab their second goal of the game with Klesyk finding the scoresheet again.  After a muffed shot that deflected off the Owls goalkeeper, Klesyk was able to gather the ball and lift it up past the goalkeeper and into the top left corner of the net to give Western New England the 2-0 lead. The Golden Bears saw six first quarter shots, holding Westfield State to just one.

In the second quarter, Klesyk would again be the goal scorer after she was able to convert on a nice passing play from the Golden Bears. The ball was inserted to the right side of the arch by Carly Anna-Barba who sent the ball over to Ali Martin, who found Klesyk in the middle of the arch. Klesyk's shot went into the middle of the goal to give WNE the 3-0 lead, a lead at which they took to halftime. After the first half, WNE led Westfield 14-3 in shots, while Riley Goulet made six saves for the Owls. GK Zoey Wexler held Westfield State off the scoreboard by making three saves in the opening 30 minutes. WNE took 14 penalty corners in the half, with the Owls taking just two.

The Golden Bears brought more of the same to the second half that they did in the first. Ali Martin would continue the scoring for Western New England after the Golden Bears were able to take advantage of another awarded penalty corner. Anna-Barba inserted the ball directly to Martin, who then took a shot that bounced around inside the arch and rolled into the net to give the Golden Bears the 4-0 lead.

Two more goals from Western New England would put the Owls away. Ali Larochelle saw the ball deflect off the Owls new goalkeeper Paige Reisman's pads and immediately took advantage. Larochelle lifted the ball up and into the cage, giving WNE the five-goal lead. The final tally for Western New England came when the Golden Bears CCC Player of the Week Sarah Johnston sent a cross crease pass from the left side of the arch into the middle of the playing field that ended up being redirected at the post by Emily Campbell and into the cage to give WNE the 6-0 lead. A goal from Westfield with four minutes remaining would put them on the board but it would not be enough as the Golden Bears would take the out of conference matchup 6-1 from the Owls.
