DANBURY, Conn. - When healthy, junior forward Evan Heymann (Ipswich, MA) is one of the best players in the region.
Heymann (pictured left) scored a pair of second half goals Sunday, including the game-winner with 2:53 remaining, as No. 13 Western New England College rallied for a 2-1 victory over No. 18 Union (N.Y.) in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship at the Westside Athletic Complex.
The Golden Bears (21-2), who defeated host Western Connecticut (2-0) yesterday, now advance to the Sweet 16 of the national tournament against No. 12 Plattsburgh State (N.Y.) next weekend. The date, site, and time will be announced on Monday.
Despite missing eight matches this fall with an injury, Heymann is third on the the team in scoring with 21 points. He has eight goals, including three game-winning scores.
Union took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute on a goal by sophomore Liberty League Player-of-the-Year Casey Ftorek that was his team best 17th of the season.
The Dutchmen kept the Golden Bears off the board until Heymann fired home a long shot from approximately 30 yards out that went over both a defender and goalie. Senior Paul Russo (Dix Hills, NY) had the assist.
Heymann notched his winning score after taking a pass in front of the Union net from freshman Brian Dill (Portland, CT). Junior Tim Larocca (East Longmeadow, MA) also assisted on the play.
Junior goalie Chris Wilk (Derry, NH) again played a solid match finishing with seven saves, including a key stop in the final minute.

Union (17-4-1) defeated Johnson & Wales 1-0 in overtime in a first round match Saturday. JWU captured the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament title with a 2-1 overtime victory over Western New England College.
The win today gave the Golden Bears a 10-0 record on the road this season and a 7-1 mark in games decided by a single goal.
