EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Freshman Chris Anderson (Moodus, CT) fired a nifty one-hitter as Western New England College posted a 3-0 victory over Johnson & Wales in the second game of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader at Pierce Stadium. The Wildcats took the first game by a similar 3-0 score.
Anderson, who retired the last eight batters, struck out four and walked three in raising his record to 3-1. He also lowered his earned-run-average to 1.95.
Sophomore third baseman Josh Jacobs (Essex Junction, VT) had two singles in three at-bats and scored a run.
The Golden Bears (13-4, 3-1) took a 1-0 lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by senior centerfielder Jeff Maurutis (Milford, CT) and added two insurance runs in the seventh helped by a costly JWU error.
In the opener, Maurutis broke up a no-hit bid by Johnson & Wales ace Dan Howard with a lead-off single in the seventh. Howard finished with a one-hitter along with 11 strikeouts and two walks in a strong performance.
