SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior Frank Candella (Marcy, NY) fired a three-hitter to lead Western New England College to a 4-0 victory over Suffolk University in the second game of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader at Trelease Park on Wednesday. Candella struck out eight with no walks to even his record at 2-2.
Senior shortstop Justin McGee (Wilbraham, MA) had a two-run double in the sixth while senior leftfielder Chris Mahoney (Yorkville, NY) had two walks and a RBI double in the first. Junior rightfielder Bobby Zoller (Bridgewater, NJ) contributed a run-scoring double in the second.
The Golden Bears had seven hits in the opener, but couldn't score against Suffolk ace Rony Mercado who fanned 10 while allowing no walks.
Western New England College is now 14-5 overall and 3-2 in the GNAC.
