NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Western New England College exploded for 44 hits and ran its winning streak to 11 games with a 20-0, 20-1 rout of Albertus Magnus College in its final Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader of the season Monday.
The two victories gave the Golden Bears a 25-5 record, including a 10-2 mark for second place in the conference.
Western New England College had a school record 28 hits in the opener, breaking the old mark of 27 set against Roger Williams in 1987. Senior center-fielder Jeff Maurutis (Milford, CT), senior shortstop Justin McGee (Wilbraham, MA). sophomore third baseman Josh Jacobs (Essex Junction, VT), and freshman second baseman Ryan Kravontka (Glastonbury, CT) each had three hits.
Jacobs, who had four runs and four RBI, senior catcher Matt Hackney (Bristol, CT), and senior left-fielder Chris Mahoney (Yorkville, NY) also slugged homers.
Junior Jason Connelly (Scituate, MA) retired all 12 batters he faced, striking out five to raise his record to 6-1.
In the second game, senior Ryan Macdonald (Milford, CT) allowed only three hits in four innings to improve to 3-2.
Freshman second baseman Marvin Hyer (Cliffwood Beach, NJ) had two hits (including a bases loaded double) and four RBI in his first collegiate start while senior right-fielder Kyle Hackney (Bristol, CT) had a pair of singles, two walks, two runs, and three runs-batted-in. Sophomore catcher Steve Hanjack (Enfield, CT) had two base hits and three runs.
Western New England College has a .349 batting average and 2.21 earned-run-average in 30 games.
