Suffolk blanks Western New England College in GNAC Tournament

Box Score

NASHUA, N.H. - Rony Mercado fired a five-hit shutout to lead top-seeded Suffolk to a 2-0 victory over second-seeded Western New England College in a winners' bracket game of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament Saturday at Holman Stadium. Mercado struck out seven and didn't walk a batter in ending the Golden Bears' school-record 13-game winning streak.

Western New England College (27-6) freshman lefty Chris Anderson (Moodus, CT) also was outstanding giving up an unearned run in the fourth and another run in the seventh while fanning five and walking four.

The Golden Bears just couldn't come up with a timely hit after leaving a runner on second with one out in the second inning, and runners on first and third with two outs in the ninth.

Suffolk was the last team to beat WNEC before its win streak and it was Mercado who was in the middle of things tossing a seven-hit shutout in a 4-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader April 13 at Trelease Park.
