PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - It was a long day of baseball for Western New England College on Tuesday as the Golden Bears posted a 9-7 victory over Fitchburg State in 13 innings in the first game before dropping a 5-4 decision in 10 innings to Stevens Institute of Technology in the nightcap.
Junior centerfielder Garrison Ward (Wyckoff, NJ) was the hitting star in the opener going 4-for-6 with five runs-batted-in that included a three-run homer that tied the contest in the seventh. He also had a two-run single in the 13th inning.
Senior rightfielder Bobby Zoller (Bridgewater, NJ) went 2-for-5 with three runs and a RBI single that put the Golden Bears ahead in the 13th inning.
Sophomore shortstop Ryan Kravontka (Glastonbury, CT) went 3-for-6 while sophomore designated hitter Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, MA) had two doubles in five at-bats along with a RBI.
Junior Eric Blanchard (Worcester, MA) gained the win in relief while junior Eric Smolin (Westford, MA) picked-up the save.
In the second game, Western New England College let a 4-2 lead slip away in the ninth inning in suffering its first loss of the season.
Junior first baseman Tom Horgan (Westfield, MA) went 3-for-5 with a RBI while junior third baseman Josh Jacobs (Essex Junction, VT) was 2-for-4 with a RBI.
The Golden Bears (3-1) have played three extra inning games in their first four contests of the season.
