Western New England College opens home season with win over Springfield

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Junior first baseman Tom Horgan (Westfield, MA) knocked in the only run of the game with a one-out single in the seventh inning as the Western New England College baseball team opened its home season Wednesday with a 1-0 victory over city rival Springfield College at chilly Trelease Park.

Sophomore second baseman Ryan Kravontka (Glastonbury, CT) went 2-for-3 for the Golden Bears, including a double off the right field fence before Horgan’s game winning hit off freshman relief pitcher Jimmy Lisowski (Warwick, MA). Horgan hit a team high .425 in Florida last week.

Sophomore lefty Chris Anderson (Moodus, CT) went the first seven innings for Western New England College allowing only three hits with six strikeouts and two walks to win his first game of the season. He is now 1-1. Senior Jason Connelly (Scituate, MA) struck out one and gave up no hits in two innings of relief to pick up the save.

Springfield senior centerfielder Scott Samolewicz (Florence, MA) went 2-for-3 with a walk. Sophomore pitcher Joe Carlos (Hampden, MA) was the hard-luck loser giving up only two hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out one and walked two. Sophomore right fielder Rex Cone (Bristol, CT) had nine putouts for the Pride.

Western New England College improves to 7-3 with its third straight win. Springfield is now 4-4.
