Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Junior first baseman Tom Horgan (Westfield, MA) extended his hitting streak to 11 games and the Western New England College baseball team ran its winning streak to four with a 5-2 victory over visiting Clark University Thursday afternoon at Trelease Park.
The Golden Bears (8-3) had only three hits, but took advantage of 10 walks and three hit batters to score three runs in the first and two in the seventh after the Cougars pulled within a run in the top of the inning.
Horgan, who has a .404 batting average, had a RBI single in the first followed by a two-run double by sophomore designated hitter Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, MA).
Western New England College added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh when senior leftfielder Jason Connelly (Scituate, MA) slugged a RBI triple to deep center and junior catcher Steve Hanjack (Enfield, CT) executed a successful squeeze play. Senior rightfielder Bobby Zoller (Bridgewater, NJ) walked four times in the contest.
Junior Mike Richardson (Hanover, MA) went 5 1/3 innings allowing six hits with four strikeouts and a walk to gain his first win of the season. Junior Eric Blanchard (Worcester, MA) was outstanding in relief giving up a hit and run with a walk and three strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings for his second save.
Clark junior catcher Gunnar Hagstrom (Yarmouth, ME) went 2-for-4 with a run. Junior first baseman Nicholas Tapper (Hopkinton, MA) had a RBI single in the sixth while sophomore centerfielder Eric Dufour (Exeter, NH) plated a run with a RBI grounder in the seventh.
The Cougars, coached by former WNEC pitching great Jason Falcon, fall to 6-8.
