SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Senior Jason Connelly (Scituate, MA) and freshman Jason Pizzoferrato (Windsor, CT) each tossed two-hit shutouts to lead the Western New England College baseball team to a 5-0, 2-0 doubleheader sweep over visiting Albertus Magnus Saturday in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) openers for both squads.
Connelly struck out five and didn’t allow any walks in improving his record to 3-0. He also tied the school record for career wins (25) previously set by David Gwozdz (2001-04).
Pizzoferrato fanned five and walked three to improve to 2-0 with his first collegiate shutout.
Sophomore second baseman Ryan Kravontka (Glastonbury, CT) had a double and two RBI in the first game while junior third baseman Josh Jacobs (Essex Junction, VT) went 2-for-2 with a run and two walks.
In the second contest, junior first baseman Tom Horgan (Westfield, MA) went 2-for-3 with a run and game-winning RBI single. Kravontka had a triple and run while senior rightfielder Bobby Zoller (Bridgewater, NJ) had a run-scoring single in the two-run sixth.
The Golden Bears improve their record to 10-3 and ran their winning streak to six games. The Falcons fall to 0-7.
