Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" The Western New England College baseball team scored four runs in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie and ran its winning streak to seven games with a 5-1 victory over visiting Fitchburg State College Sunday at Trelease Park.
Sophomore second baseman Ryan Kravontka (Glastonbury, CT) had the game-winning RBI while senior pinch-hitter Jason Connelly (Scituate, MA) had a sacrifice fly and junior catcher Steve Hanjack (Enfield, CT) a RBI single in the inning. Two of the four runs in the inning were unearned while another run scored on a wild pitch.
Junior Eric Smolin (Westford, MA) picked-up his first win of the season after allowing only one hit with a strikeout in three innings of relief. Sophomore Chris Anderson (Moodus, CT) also pitched well giving up one run with seven strikeouts and only two walks in six innings.
Sophomore designated hitter Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, MA) went 1-for-3 with a double, run, and walk. Junior first baseman Tom Horgan (Westfield, MA) and junior third baseman Josh Jacobs (Essex Junction, VT) each went 1-for-3 with a run.
Western New England College is 11-3 on the season after completing a 5-0 week. Fitchburg State falls to 6-11.
