WALTHAM, Mass. - A week-long, eight-game road trip came to end when Western New England College dropped a 12-7 decision against Brandeis in a non conference game Thursday afternoon at Stein Diamond.

The Golden Bears, the top-ranked team in the NEIBA Division III poll, connected for 12 hits but committed four errors that led to five unearned runs.

Junior third baseman Josh Jacobs (Essex Junction, VT) had a single, two walks, and three-run homer in the second inning that gave the visitors a brief 5-4 lead.

Junior first baseman Tom Horgan (Westfield, MA) and sophomore designated hitter Travis Schwamb (West Springfield,. MA) each had two hits and a RBI.

Junior catcher Steve Hanjack (Enfield, CT) was 2-for-2 with two walks and a pair of runs. Sophomore Marvin Hyer (Cliffwood Beach, NJ) and freshman right fielder  Chris Newall (Wallingford, CT) also had two hits and a run.

Western New England College (21-7), which saw its five-game winning come to an end, won six of eight contests during its road trip. The Golden Bears return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action with a doubleheader against Rivier starting at noon Saturday (April 15) at Trelease Park.

Freshman right fielder Mike Alfego led the Judges by going 3-for-5 with three RBI, two runs, a double, and stolen base. Brandeis (14-7-1) is ranked seventh in the region.
