SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Sophomore designated hitter Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, MA) went 2-for-3 with a double, run, and three RBI to lead the Western New England College baseball team to an 11-1 victory over Mitchell College Monday at Trelease Park.

Junior left-fielder Eric Smolin (Westford, MA) also had two hits in three at-bats, scored twice, stole a base, and knocked in a run. Junior third baseman Josh Jacobs (Essex Junction, VT) added two singles, scored a pair of runs, and knocked in another run.

Freshman right-hander Jason Pizzoferrato (Windsor, CT) gave up five hits and one run in seven innings. He struck out eight and walked only one in raising his record to 6-1.

Western New England College led 3-0 before breaking the game open with six runs in the fifth inning.

The Golden Bears (24-7) were ranked second in the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division III poll earlier this afternoon.

Team members from the Harlem, New York RBI (Rejuvenating Baseball in the Inner City) baseball and softball teams attended the game as guests of Western New England College.
