QUINCY, Mass. - Senior co-captain Jason Connelly (Scituate, MA) tossed a four-hitter and became the school's all-time leader in wins as the Western New England College baseball team defeated Suffolk University 5-1 in the second game of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader Saturday at Adams Park.
Suffolk scored an unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 2-1 win in the opener.
Connelly, a right-hander, fanned four to give him 26 strikeouts for the spring and allowed only his first walk in raising his record to 4-1. He has a 26-9 mark that breaks the old mark of 25 wins established by David Gwozdz from 2001-04.
Trailing 1-0, the Golden Bears scored five runs in the seventh highlighted by a RBI singles by junior pinch hitter Chris Fredericks (Wallingford, CT) and freshman second baseman Mike Beck (Whitesboro, NY) who picked the right time for his first collegiate hit.
Sophomore Chris Anderson (Moodus, CT) went 9 2/3 innings in the first game allowing six hits while striking out 11 and walking three. Connelly, who played second base, went 2-for-5 with a RBI single.
Western New England College is now 17-6 and 6-2 in the conference.
