Western New England College suffers one-run loss at Eastern Connecticut

MANSFIELD, Conn. - No. 23 Western New England College opend the northern portion of its baseball schedule with a 4-3 loss at Eastern Connectiocut State University in a non-league contest Thursday afternoon (Mar. 29).

Senior catcher Stephen Hanjack (Enfield, CT) went 3-for-3 with a double, run, and RBI for the Golden Bears. Junior designated hitter Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, MA) went 2-for-5.

Senior Mike Richardson (Hanover, MA) went the first six innings allowing seven hits and three hits while walking four with a strikeouts. Freshman Matt Thadeio (West Greenwich, RI) took the loss in relief.

It was a close game the entire way with the score tied 1-1 after three innings and again at 3-3 before the Warriors pushed across the deciding run in the bottom of the seventh. The Golden Bears had a runner on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, but fell short.

Center fielder Randy Re had two hits (including a triple) and two RBI for ECSU while second baseman Travis Horrigan had a pair of hits and a run. First baseman Shawn Gilblair had the game-winning RBI on a ground-out in the seventh. Jimmy Jagodzinski allowed seven hits in eight innings and struck out eight with three walks for the win.

Western New England College falls to 5-5 while Eastern Connecticut evens its mark at 6-6.
