SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England College baseball team remained undefeated in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC)with a 7-1, 12-2 sweep over Rivier College Friday afternoon (Apr. 6) at Trelease Park. The Golden Bears are now 10-6 overall and 4-0 in the conference. The Raiders drop to 6-7 and 4-4 in the GNAC.
Game 1 Highlights
Western New England College - Senior pitcher Eric Smolin (Westford, MA) fired a four-hitter with a career high 12 strikeouts and only two walks to improve to 3-1. Senior center fielder Garrison Ward (Wyckoff, NJ), senior first baseman Tom Horgan (Westfield, MA), junior shortstop Ryan Kravontka (Glastonbury, CT), and freshman second baseman Justin Walz (Groton, CT) each had two hits. Ward also scored three runs.
Rivier - Senior third baseman Mike Crawford (Yarmouth, ME) went 2-for-3 with a RBI double.
Game 2 Highlights
Western New England College - Junior designated hitter Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, MA) slugged a three-run homer (his first of the season) to highlight an eight-run second inning. Walz had a triple and run. Senior Eric Blanchard (Worcester, MA) went six innings for his second win of the season.
Rivier – Freshman shortstop Corey Hayes (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) had a RBI double while Crawford added a RBI single.
Western New England College was the visiting team in the doubleheader after the games were moved from Nashua, New Hampshire to Springfield.
