SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – In his first collegiate start sophomore lefty Bryan Calzone (Bethel, CT) allowed only five hits in six innings to lead the Western New England College baseball team to a 9-0 victory over visiting Westfield State College Monday afternoon (April 9) at Trelease Park. He struck out four and didn't walk a batter in raising his record to 2-0.
Prior to today's contest, Calzone had pitched only 5 2/3 innings in three appearances. He gained his first collegiate win against Wisconsin-Stevens Point on March 23 at the Port Charlotte Invitational in Florida.
Freshman Erich Geckle (Baldwin Place, NY) pitched the final three innings giving up only one hit with three strikeouts and a pair of walks.
Junior designated hitter Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, MA) had a single and double that each knocked in a run.
Freshman right fielder Steve Kearney (Glastonbury, CT) had three of the team's 10 walks and scored three runs. Senior left fielder Eric Smolin (Westford, MA) also had a single and double while senior catcher Stephen Hanjack (Enfield, CT) added a pair of singles.
Western New England College, ranked seventh in this week's New England Division III coaches' poll, now has a 12-7 record.
Senior shortstop Justin Parr (North Attleboro, MA) had two singles while freshman center fielder Mike Trachtenberg (Newton, MA) had a single and stolen base for the Owls (6-9).
