Western New England College blanked by Wheaton at Greater Phoenix Invitational

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Western New England College banged out eight hits, but couldn't dent the plate as Wheaton posted a 3-0 victory Sunday afternoon (March 16) at the RussMatt Greater Phoenix Baseball Invitational.

Sophomore second baseman Justin Walz (Groton, CT) had three of the hits while senior shortstop Ryan Kravontka (Glastonbury, CT) had two.

Wheaton, ranked 13th nationally in the pre-season poll, scored a pair of runs in the first and another run in the third.

Senior third baseman Scott Guillerault (South Portland, ME) had a triple, run, and two RBI while junior shortstop Nick Pecora (Highland Park, NJ) had two hits and a run.

Junior pitcher Brian Hughes (Dudley, MA) gained his second win of the season after allowing five hits in seven innings.

The Lyons now have a 6-4 record.

WNEC junior pitcher Bryan Calzone (Bethel, CT) settled down after a shaky start giving up six hits with seven strikeouts and a walk in six innings.

The Golden Bears fall to 0-3 on their trip to the Grand Canyon State.
