Western New England College rallies for win over Eastern Connecticut in home opener

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior left-fielder Mike Beck (Whitesboro, NY) scampered home with the winning run on a wild pitch with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Western New England College baseball team rallied for a 3-2 non-league victory over Eastern Connecticut in its home opener Thursday (Mar. 27) at Trelease Park.

This was the fourth consecutive win for the Golden Bears who improve their record to 4-5.

Beck led off the inning with a single, went to second on a passed ball, and advanced to the third on a fielders' choice sacrifice bunt by sophomore pinch-hitter Nick Martino (Glastonbury, CT).

WNEC tied the score in the eighth when sophomore second baseman Justin Walz (Groton, CT) led off with a double and scored on a pair of wild pitches.

Senior first baseman Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, MA) singled, walked twice, and had a RBI sacrifice fly that tied the game at 1-1 in the third.

Junior Bryan Calzone (Bethel, CT) pitched three innings in relief to gain his second win in three decisions.

Senior Chris Anderson (Moodus, CT) went the first five innings allowing only six hits, a run, three strikeouts, and no walks.

Eastern Connecticut sophomore shortstop Melvin Castillo (Danbury, CT) went 2-for-3 with a RBI single that gave the visitors a 2-1 lead in the seventh.

The Warriors (8-6) had three stolen bases in the game, including two by sophomore left-fielder John Parke (Middlefield, CT).

Junior pitcher James Kukucka (Vernon, CT) (2-1) entered the game in the ninth and took the loss.
