SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England College baseball team posted a 10-3, 5-0 doubleheader sweep over visiting Nichols College in its Commonwealth Coast Conference debut Sunday (March 30) at Trelease Park.

The Golden Bears ran their winning streak to six games and went over the .500 mark for the first time this spring with a 6-5 record.

Junior pitcher Jason Pizzoferrato (Windsor, CT) had a complete game performance in the opener allowing only five hits with five strikeouts and no walks in raising his record to 2-0.

Senior designated hitter Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, MA) and junior leftfielder Mike Beck (Whitesboro, NY) each had two doubles and three RBI.

Sophomore first baseman Joe Griglun (Southington, CT) had two hits (including a RBI triple), and two runs.

Freshman third baseman Tony Trubia (Tolland, CT) added two hits and two runs while junior centerfielder Chris Newell (Wallingford, CT) contributed a pair of hits and a run.

Nichols sophomore second baseman Alexander Montalbo (Wilmington, MA) went 2-for-3 with a run.

In the second game, senior pitcher Brian Shimansky (West Caldwell, NJ) went six innings giving up seven hits with three strikeouts and only one walk in gaining his first win of the season. He now has a 1-1 record. Sophomore Erich Geckle (Baldwin Place, NY) pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh.

Griglun continued his hot hitting with a triple and two RBI. He has hit safely in every game this season.
