SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Senior Kayte Devine (New Fairfield, CT) poured in three goals with three assists and junior Lindsey Fenton (Pelham, MA) added four goals as the Western New England College women's lacrosse team capped a busy week with a convincing 16-8 non-league victory in the rain over host Mount Holyoke Saturday (March 8) at MHC Turf Field.
Playing for the third time in five days, the Golden Bears improved their record to 2-1. This was the season opener for the Lyons.
Freshman Jeanmarie Barbato (Huntington Station, NY) enjoyed another solid outing with three goals and two while senior Kaitlin Zangle (Wingdale, NY) added three goals and an assist.
Junior Michelle Thompson (Wilbraham, MA) also netted three goals, scoring twice in the opening 4:41 as the Golden Bears took an 8-2 lead into half-time. The Lyons got no closer than six in the second stanza. WNEC outshot Mount Holyoke by a 38-26 margin.
Freshman Marissa Bonitatibus (Yorktown Heights, NY) compiled six saves in 38 minutes while classmate Erin Doherty (Westford, MA) stopped eight shots. Both goalies each allowed four goals. Junior Erin Conn (Yorktown Heights, NY) led the defense with six ground balls and five caused turnovers.
Mount Holyoke also had five players scoring goals, led by sophomore Peggy Wefald (Granger, IN) who fired in four goals.
