SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Seven was the magic number as the Western New England College baseball team defeated host Springfield College 7-3 in a non-league contest Tuesday afternoon (April 1) at Berry-Allen Field.
The Golden Bears scored all seven runs in the fourth inning in extending their winning streak to seven games and record to 7-5.
WNEC banged out 11 hits, including five doubles, as every player in the starting lineup had at least one hit.
Sophomore catcher Jon Dominik (West Springfield, MA) had a single, two-run double, and run while junior left-fielder Mike Beck (Whitesboro, NY) also collected two hits while scoring a run.
Sophomore second baseman Justin Walz (Groton, CT) also knocked in two runs with a double.
Sophomore first baseman Joe Griglun (Southington, CT) had a single to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.
Junior pitcher Bryan Calzone (Bethel, CT) went the first six innings allowing 10 hits and two runs, but the crafty lefty fanned 10 and walked only one in gaining his third win of the season.
Freshman Evan Michaud (Windsor Locks, CT) gave up two hits and a run with a strikeout in three innings to earn the save.
Springfield totaled 12 hits with junior shortstop Jamie Mackie (Springfield, MA) getting two singles and double with a run. Sophomore center-fielder Joey Kropa (Cranford, NJ) also had three hits while senior third baseman Ryan Hingston (Windsor, VT) had a double that plated two runs in the fourth.
Sophomore Ryan White (Colchester, CT) took the loss for the Pride who falls to 5-11.
