SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior right-fielder Robert Foote (Walpole, MA) knocked in the go-ahead run with a RBI single in the eighth as Wheaton posted a 4-2 victory over Western New England College in a non-league baseball contest Friday afternoon (Apr. 11) at Trelease Park.
The Lyons, ranked ninth in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Collegiate Baseball Division III poll, improve to 22-5.
Foote finished with two hits while freshman designated hitter Sean Munley (Trenton, NJ) had a single, double, and two runs.
Senior pitcher Keith Pescosolido (Newton, MA) took the win in relief allowing only one hit with a strikeout in 1 1/3 innings. He is now 3-0 this spring. Junior Josh Simmons (Cranston, RI) picked up his seventh save also going an inning and a third giving up no hits with a walk and strikeout.
Western New England College (16-7) scored runs in the first and third to take an early 2-0 lead before Wheaton tied the contest with single runs in the fourth and sixth.
The Golden Bears collected 11 hits with sophomore second baseman Justin Walz (Groton, CT) banging out a triple and single while scoring a run. Sophomore designated hitter Joe Griglun (Southington, CT) had two hits and a RBI.
Junior center-fielder Chris Newell (Wallingford, CT) also had two hits and a run while extending his hitting streak to 18 games.
Sophomore pitcher Erich Geckle (Baldwin Place, NY) (2-3) took the loss in relief.
