SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior left-fielder Chris Newell (Wallingford, CT) extended his hitting streak to 20 games as the Western New England College baseball team defeated visiting Anna Maria College 12-2 and 15-0 in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon (Apr. 13) at Trelease Park.
Newell went 4-for-6 in the two contests with a triple, five runs and three RBI as the Golden Bears raised their record to 18-7 overall and 11-1 in the conference.
In the opener, senior first baseman Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, MA) had two hits, a run, and four RBI. Sophomore second baseman Justin Walz (Groton, CT) went 2-for-2 with three runs and a RBI.
Senior Chris Anderson (Moodus, CT) was the winning pitcher allowing seven hits with eight strikeouts and a walk. Both runs were unearned. Anderson is now 3-2 on the season.
Junior pitcher Jason Pizzferrato (Windsor, CT) remained undefeated at 4-0 after tossing a two-hitter in the second game with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Schwamb served as the designated hitter in the second game and collected more two hits with a run and RBI to complete a 4-for-6 afternoon.
Senior shortstop Ryan Kravontka (Glastonbury, CT) had a pair of doubles, two runs, and three RBI.
The Amcats managed just nine hits in the twinbill in dropping to 8-15 overall and 4-8 in the conference.
