Winning streak reaches nine as Western New England College sweeps Gordon

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England College baseball team ran its winning streak to nine games with a 14-4, 8-2 doubleheader sweep over visiting Gordon College Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 2) at chilly Trelease Park.

After starting the season with five straight losses, the Golden Bears now have a 9-5 record, including a perfect 4-0 mark in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).

In the first game, Western New England College scored nine runs in the second inning and took advantage of 13 walks to take the easy victory.

Senior pitcher Chris Anderson (Moodus, CT) struck out 10 batters in six innings and gave up four runs (two earned) on two hits with three walks in raising his record to 2-1.

WNEC banged out 13 hits with senior first baseman Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, MA) reaching base five times on a single, double, and three walks. He scored three runs and had three RBI.

Sophomore Erich Geckle (Baldwin Place, NY) went the distance in the second contest for his first win of the season in three decisions. He gave up 10 hits, but struck out six and didn't walk anyone.

Junior centerfielder Chris Newell (Wallingford, CT) had three hits, scored twice, and knocked in a pair of runs. He finished with five hits in the twinbill.

Sophomore first baseman Joe Griglun (Southington, CT) had a single and three RBI in the opener along with a single, triple, run, and RBI in the second game to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. He had a close call in the opener coming to bat without a hit in the sixth inning. Griglun hit a pop foul that was dropped by the third baseman for an error, then lined a sharp two-run single to left to keep the hitting streak intact.

The Fighting Scots did better in the second game pounding out 10 hits as sophomore catcher Stephen Kefalas (Wenham, MA) had a pair of singles and two RBI.

Sophomore catcher/third baseman Jonathan Waldie (Methuen, MA) had three hits in the twinbill.

Gordon falls to 5-9 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
